§ 01 — What This Book Is

A working framework — not another theory book.

The Independent Investor is the operating manual for a physician-built investment method — the High-Value Investor Framework, or HVIF™.

It's written for the working professional: the doctor, lawyer, engineer, founder, or operator who has accumulated capital, distrusts most of the investment industry, and wants the rigour to manage their own portfolio without becoming a full-time analyst.

The method draws on twenty-plus years of clinical decision-making, two decades inside Canadian healthcare technology, and a lifetime of reading the great investors — Graham, Munger, Marks, Greenblatt, Felix — translated into something you can actually execute, across registered, corporate, and non-registered accounts, through any tide.

You will finish this book with a scoring system, a macro lens, a position-sizing discipline, and a tax architecture — all of it grounded in evidence, none of it dependent on guessing what next quarter brings.

5·
Pillars of the QSCORE equity rating system — scored consistently across the investable universe.
6·
Tide bands from full deployment to active crisis — built on yields, curves, and credit spreads.
20+
Years of clinical, entrepreneurial, and portfolio experience distilled into one workable framework.
§ 02 — Inside the Book

The chapter map — from first principles to deployment.

Eight chapters, structured as a working sequence. Read it straight through to absorb the method, then keep it on the desk as a working reference when the market shifts.

I.
The Five Pillars
The QSCORE rating system. Why these five, scored this way, on this scale — and why "above 700" is the line that matters.
II.
Building the Universe
How to construct a focused watchlist of 60–100 names worth your attention, and how to keep it disciplined as markets change.
III.
The Gate
The four-condition timing filter — moving averages, volume, earnings windows, momentum. Why timing alone isn't a strategy, but ignoring it is a mistake.
IV.
Reading the Tide
The macro lens. Treasury yields, the 2s/10s curve, IG and HY credit spreads. How to read them, score them, and translate them into posture.
V.
Position Sizing
The dial that determines outcomes more than stock selection. How to scale into conviction, scale out of doubt, and respect the cash buffer.
VI.
Tax Architecture
The Canadian lens — TFSA, RRSP, corporate, non-registered — and how the same business belongs in a different account depending on what it pays.
VII.
Selling Discipline
The hardest skill in investing. Three legitimate reasons to sell, two illegitimate ones, and how to tell which one you're actually using.
VIII.
The Crash Protocol
What you do before a crisis is what determines what you do during one. The pre-committed playbook for tail-risk events.
§ 03 — Early Praise

What readers are saying.

A framework I wish I'd had twenty years ago. Dr. Kinahan writes the way a great clinician practices — methodically, evidence-first, and with an unsentimental respect for what's actually known.

The chapter on the Tide table alone is worth the price of the book. Most investing books tell you what happened; this one tells you what to do when it happens again.

§ 04 — About the Author

A surgeon's eye for what compounds.

Dr. Thomas J. Kinahan is a urologist, Clinical Professor at UBC, and the founding physician behind Accuro EMR — now Canada's largest electronic medical record by user base.

After two decades of clinical practice and a parallel career in healthcare technology, he built HVIF™ out of necessity: a way to manage personal and corporate capital with the same rigour applied to surgical decisions and product engineering. The framework integrates factor-based evidence, value investing principles, macro risk awareness, and a Canadian tax lens — translated for working professionals who don't have time to become full-time analysts.

He lives in Kelowna, British Columbia, with vineyards in the Okanagan and Similkameen valleys. When he's not in the operating theatre or the markets, he's likely behind the wheel of a vintage car on the Hagerty Spring Thaw, or fishing — which, he insists, is more closely related to investing than most people realize.
